Introduction

St.Joseph’s Chapel at Yim Tin Tsai was inaugurated and blessed in 1890. As a Roman Style Architect, it is believed that the chapel was designed by the PIME priests. The current chapel has undergone rehabilitation in May 2004. Subsequently it was given the Award of Merit by the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2005. On 25 January 2011, It was listed as Grade 3 Historic Building by the Hong Kong Antiquities Advisory Board in 1990 and then further upgraded to Grade 2.

From 1879 to 1880, Father Freinademetz from Society of the Divine Word started his missionary work in Sai Kung and often visited Yim Tin Tsai.
